Why we numbered them.
A signature can be forged and a label can be reprinted. A number cut into the object the moment it is finished is harder to argue with. When we numbered Series Zero, one hundred and no more, the point was never scarcity. Scarcity is a marketing word. The point was accountability. Each object answers for itself. This one says: I am the forty-first, and there is no second forty-first.
Numbering changes the maker as much as the holder. You work differently on 087/100 than you would on "unit 87 of batch 4." The number watches you. It will outlive the hands that made it, and it knows. Every seam, every seal, every weight of gold leaf gets set down under that witness. It is the oldest discipline in craft: do the work as if it will be counted, because it will be.
GENSŌ carries the count into a new series, two hundred this time, each one engraved and none repeated. People ask what happens when the numbers run out. Nothing happens. The edition simply closes. That is the whole point of a number: it is a promise with an ending, and a promise with an ending is the only kind worth engraving.
